Has Music Lost its Way?

I know we're almost halfway through the week, but as I reflect on the Billboard Music Award show. Curiosity settled into my brain. Although, the show was not bad, I wouldn’t say it was phenomenal either. While I observed each artist who performed that night: did music lose its passion or have the artists?

I want to be clear; I’m not saying these musical artists do not deserve to win an award. However, I feel that some of these singers have lost their way. Ever since 2005, the music industry went down the toilet. I mean, if you really consider how drastic the music industry has altered. You would probably agree with me or you would not. Either way, I cannot name top twenty-five memorable songs I can call a classic.

You’re wondering, “Where is she going with this?” You see, my parents were born in the '50s and learning from the music they grew up listening to has its privileges. While growing up in my parents’ household, especially in my teen years, my parents wanted my sisters and me to value music. At the time, we didn’t understand what they meant by “appreciating” music. Now reflecting on what they shared with me, I see what they mean. In order to adore music, you must study your musical history. You’ll learn what all the musical pioneers had to endure in order for artists like Rihanna, Beyonce, Britney Spears, Kesha, and many others to be on stage today.

Today’s music is more like jingles. Popcorn music (if you want to call it that). I’m befuddled when some of these musical stars, notice I didn’t say artists, sing or rap about things with little substance are calling it music. There’s a distinction between the two. Musical stars have made their way to Hollywood with hits your average listener would call catchy, on the other hand, they have made an impact in your life with songs you want to drown into while having a bad, week, or year.

Yes, you can go clubbing while dancing to your favorite song. The song’s intention is make you feel good while dancing with someone you think is hot. And that’s fine. On the flip side, I don’t know about many of you, but I love to hear songs you can relate to.

When Little Richard, Elvis Presley, the Jackson Five, the Beatles, and so on, came out, the intention of creating a musical movement is to take people’s minds off what happened during the time of racism and so many other events. These musical geniuses didn’t want people to be depressed. They wanted people to celebrate and yet they had given their fans an escapism to feel and be.

And still, people have their utmost respect for artists like Stevie Wonder, U2, and other musicians. You want to know why? They had and still have a great impact in musical history! And that’s awesome to inspire listeners in a profound way.

The '90s music, it didn’t matter what genre was out there, you could name twenty-five hits or better. Music had substance, and not to say that the majority of today’s music don’t, but very few recording artists can maintain true identity without losing fans. Only a small number can do that.
Michael Jackson, may he rest in peace, even though he was labeled King of Pop, but he had a message to deliver to the people, he had open doors for today‘s singers, and his purpose was served. And to this day, there is not one person on this planet who hadn’t had a memory of the late musical artist (except for newborn babies).

We seriously need a musical renaissance. At the rate music is going, I would hate to see what will happen in the next five years, if music will survive. Music can’t die because music is a universal language that speaks volumes to a person’s heart.

If you’re having a lousy day, you can tune into artists like Alicia Keys, Mary J Blige, etc. These singers touch matters of the heart that listeners can relate to. Please know I’m not saying artists like Rihanna, Chris Brown, Kesha, Lady Gaga, and many others in this decade don’t have talent because they do.

It’s quite clear that Lady Gaga has her musical identity figured out; people are already drawn to her. I have to wonder though, some of these people who became superstars; why did they join the music industry in the first place?

Are some of these singers there to make history or do they want to be seen? I want to clarify this with you. People like Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Jill Scott, and so many others didn’t go into music because of fame. They actually have something to sing about. Fame is only icing on the cake because their gifts made room for them.

There’s nothing wrong with being current. It’s imperative to be informed of what’s going on, so you know where you’re going in the future. Nonetheless, have some valid reasons why being in the music industry means something to you, if you consider being a musician. Study your craft and hone it, find your identity, and embrace what others are afraid to say without having pessimistic pressure of what the media wants.

The reason of being an artist, whether you are a singer, actor, writer, photographer, and so forth, is standing out and expressing who you truly are, and you’re not easily intimidated by public opinion. An artist wants to give people something to talk about, think about and to be inspired in spite of what’s going on.

Music is an expression to the entire world and it shouldn’t go to waste based on top hits, but memorable hits you’ll be able to share with the next generation.

Leaping Out on Faith

Deuteronomy 31:6, 8, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." (NIV)

This is an interesting topic to discuss because most of us are fearing the unknown, especially when we're taken out of our comfort zone. The Lord pressed this upon my heart to write today because I know exactly how you feel, as I’m facing a storm in my life that doesn’t want to pass away.

When I read this scripture, the meaning has spoken volumes earlier today. I believe God wants me to exercise my faith in a mighty way. And I want to encourage you to do the same. Maybe God is getting your attention that He wants you in a different season of your life. Maybe where you were seven months ago or last year is not where God wants you to be. We, as people, always make excuses, “The timing is never right,” or “I don’t have the funds to deliver what I want to see happen in my life.”

And this might hold some truth to what you're feeling. Please know, precious heart, you cannot be moved by what you see. God is watching over you and believe me, He already knows what you’re facing! He has already figured out the solution for you. It’s up to you to be sensitive to discover what it is, in order to enter the next phase of your life.

If you trust and believe that God has you in the palm of His hand, then walk in faith.

When you ask, the answer will be given to you. When you seek, you will find what you’re looking for. And when you knock, yes, the door will be open unto you (See Matt 7:7).

We’re so used to following practical rules that were given to us when we were children. And now that most of us who have grown up, we still try to abide by the same rules.

I’m learning quickly in life, sometimes you have to bend your plans, so that God can step in and give you something better!

I’m a living witness of this because God has come through for me many times and I don’t regret for trusting Him in my dire situations. You’ll learn more about my stories when my e-book How to Overcome Discouragement (When People and Odds are Against You) is published.

Another thing I’m learning especially after the false prophecy of The Apocalypse, is that we can only worry about today, for tomorrow is not promised to us. It’s always good to plan because attaining reachable goals is the key to having a successful life.

I know your path looks dreary right now, but if you adhere to what I’m speaking to you, I promise you, your future is right around the corner for you to walk in it.

It doesn’t matter what people say to you, that your dream can’t happen. Because once God place the desire in your heart of what you want to be, no one can take it away from you. Only you can hinder your progression, if you let it. I hope you won't stand in the way of your destiny either, because so many opportunities will come flying at you, you won’t have enough to receive them all.

The beauty about life is: there is no one way to be successful. There are many avenues to success, we have to be willing to hunt after them and never let go of our dreams.

When you are in solitude, ask yourself, what is it you want to see happen tomorrow, next week, three months, or next year? Write them down and tape it against the wall to remind yourself daily what you want to see occur.

I’m blessed to share this information with you because it is my desire to see that each and every one of you live out your biggest dreams.

As long as you’re alive, you have hope, beloved! You shall live and not die. You shall walk on and know that whatever it is you’re going through, it will work out for your good. Be encouraged, God will not let you fall, He's in control. And that’s for sure!

You have to be bold in these dark times and get what belongs to you. And after you seek what you longed for, then you in turn, have to help someone else. Be available to help your brother and sister who are in need.

For we all are brothers and sisters, and we need each other to survive.

Do not let stubborn pride hinder you from your blessings. Do not let what society say poison you into believing that it’s all about self. It’s a lie and it's farther from the truth. And if you think I’m lying, look at Oprah Winfrey, she is successful because she discovered in order to be where she is, she has to offer something too, without any selfish intent. That’s why she is receiving so many praises for what she has done because people know the real thing when they see it.

And I pray my message to you today is singing a sweet melody to your soul. Walk with your head held high and be a good soldier, and endure your trial with the good fight of faith, and know that if you’re patient, your time to shine will come when you least expect it. And when your destiny happens, the reward will be sweet! Stay encouraged and know you are loved and I wish you nothing but the best. Walk in your destiny; it’s time to see what God has in store for you.

Looking For Love

As I'm sitting here watching The Bachelorette, a few things came to my mind. Have we as people gone too far with looking for love? Please know that I'm in no way bashing the show. Hey, if reality television is all about getting viewer's attention, then by all means, go for it. However, I find the majority of reality TV shows are overrated. I felt for Ashley when she cried her eyes out on The Bachelor. I can't say that I blame her because who wants to be rejected? Rejection is one thing, but having to be rejected in front of millions of viewers is over the edge for me.

I hope Ashley will be with her true love. I can't mince words, so I will be quite frank on how I feel about love. Love is a beautiful gift for anyone to receive. And it's sad that we waste love on what we want it to be. Nowadays, some people, if not all, believe that love is solely based on looks, which is true to a certain extent. Let's be honest with ourselves, physical attraction shouldn't be the only factor we look for while settling for love.

I'm about to explain why. If you really think about this, I mean really ponder the possibilities on why people are so hungry for love. Why are people pursuing it?

One, no one wants to be lonely and it's not good for anyone to be alone.

Two, people are in a hurry to follow society "standards" on what they believe is a good age to find love.

Three, boredom.

Four, just to please friends who are already couples.

Five, having a significant other symbolizes that you are somebody.

Six, just because the relationship is "convenient."

If there are more, then feel free to add on to this list. Love is something to not be tampered with. Love is the greatest gift of all, yet many have failed to understand the true meaning of love.

1 Corinthians 13 explains in detail what real love is about. You can check it out for yourself. In the meantime, I will paraphrase. You can have everything in the world and still feel empty inside. If you have nothing to offer in life, life really has no meaning. If you're only looking out for self and not caring about the interests of others, love is definitely not in the equation.

Love is selfless and it is kind. Love is not rude nor boastful and it doesn't seek pleasure to hurt others, nonetheless, shame them.

Love breathes on you easily as the wind blows on your skin. Love is second nature like breathing. Love possesses a definition all on its own and it's shown through action.

How is love shown through action? It's simple. With us. I'm smiling as I write this because I'm very concerned with how the world view love today. And I'm saddened with the idea that we are so quick to grab what society calls love. If someone is going out his or her way for you, whether this person is a parent, friend, or even a person who is sent through divine intervention, his or her intention is to make sure you are happy.

He or she is concerned for your well-being. He or she sees the potential in you and encourage you to go on and seek what you desire for your life. His or her desire is to assist you without selfish intent and hope to see that you live out your wildest dreams.

There are all kinds of love: humanitarian, family, platonic, and even romantic.

I believe what most people are desperate for is: romance.

Some people feel you are complete when you find your soul mate. That couldn't be more further from the truth. Love starts with us. I'm learning to appreciate me, adoring me, and seeking out all that is waiting for me. That's why I'm able to extend myself to others. Even though, there are times when I will get hurt in the process. I've already found a love so pure and deep that no one can ever fill in my heart. When I gave my life to the Lord, He has shown me the true meaning what love is. He gave His only begotten son Jesus to die for you and me. But a man with such manner as this to sacrifice his own life for us. No love can compare to that.

I'm breathing again because of God. I was in such a broken place that I didn't find a reason to live anymore and I was 22, at the time, thinking about suicide.

At 23, I was serious about finding God and wanting to see this destiny He has mapped out for my life. And now I have a purpose in my life to help others and I pray my writing will be effective in your life to pursue all that God desires for you. I, at one point, was searching for a romantic love and every time I've tried, I have failed miserably. I shouldn't look for love because society says, "Oh, if you don't have someone to love you, you are worthless or something is wrong with you." And that is where Satan deceive people.

Yes, I'm still young, but right now I'm focusing on me. I don't need a boyfriend at this stage in my life because there is so much God wants me to do on Earth. Of course, I want to fall in love and I would be lying to you if I say I don't. I yearn to have a companion who will love me just the way I am and accept my flaws. I want to be honest and feel that I don't have to pretend for someone to get me. Either the person relates to you or he or she doesn't. You can't force love and expect it to come when you think it should. You will only set yourself up for disappointment. Make yourself whole by finding activities you enjoy. Get involved with helping others and see their needs that you don't normally see. Look closer of what's going on inside the individual.

You'll be surprise what effect you can have on a person's life by just being present. Take the time to care and extend yourself to be in his or her world.

Be open and be willing to explore, even if most people won't receive you. Make your time productive.

I don't want you to misconstrue what I'm saying. I'm all for achieving goals in life because without a dream in your heart, you will perish. While you're on your journey to success, search for love by being available to others and meeting their needs as well. For it is better to actually care for someone who has given up on life versus causing someone unnecessary pain just because you don't agree with what he or she say to you. You can't go wrong with sharing. You'd be surprise what opportunities will be available to you when you take the time to care.

Love will come when you least expect it. Whatever stage you are in your life, focus on what you need to do, so you can be a better you when you meet others along the way. May your day be filled with love and know that you are loved and cared for. Know this:  as long there is breath in your body, you have something to live for. Love is already at your door, but you have to be willing to let it in, even if it's not what you expect it to be. You're worth loving and knowing. Always know it.

Looking For A Sign

I'm dedicating this blog to anyone who feels like they have given up on life. Do you ever feel like no one understands you? Do you feel like sometimes people misconstrue your thoughts and breathe out cruelty towards you. I know I have. I will make this clear. I've been dealing with a lot of unfair situations that happened to me lately. I do my best to not complain, for I know it doesn't make my situation any better.

Some people feel they have to be right and know all the answers. Some people feel that once your voice your opinion, you don't count, maybe you're not even human. Some people feel they have to justify themselves because of the error they have made affected your life. Some people believe it's all right to do wrong and get away with it. Boy, they're sadly mistaken.

I look for a sign to show me when it's time to give up and when it's time to let go. I look for a sign when I feel no one sides with me and I see that I will walk alone. I look for a sign where God will tell me, I will be all right. Because no one knows the heartache I've encountered for the last seven to eight months of my life (late 2010 until now).

How do you look for a sign when you need a new opportunity to come knocking at your door? How do you look for a sign when you feel that everyone is against you? How do you look for a sign to know when good things will come your way?

The only and simple solution is: to pray. I'm a living witness that prayer changes things. It's not cliché, it's actually true. Something happens when you pray versus when you don't. Don't you know you move God with your heartfelt prayer? A prayer no one else knows about, but you and God?

God knows each and every one of us and God always uses a sign to get our attention. Whether it's about people, situations, or ourselves. I'm happy God granted me discernment, for discernment is a blessing from God, and only those who are spiritually discerned can value this special gift and not take it lightly when troubles come your way. If people take it as being judgmental and harsh, they sadly don't know that you must be aware of your surroundings--at all times. I'm not talking about being paranoid because you can't live in fear. I get alarmed when a complete stranger invades my personal space and they feel it's all right to do so. I don't feel safe because I don't know what that stranger might do to me.

You see, with your loved ones and friends, it's all right for them to be near you because they know everything about you. True friends and family knows when not to cross a boundary with you and they also know when to let you be.

And that's what I love about God. I always look for His presence to be near me. When I get alone to talk with Him. I know I will be all right because He has everything under control, even though, in the natural realm, it doesn't seem that way right now. I have to ask God to show me a sign and sharpen my senses, so I know and be prepared for what's ahead. When you know what you're dealing with, you can fight it better because you know what you're coming up against.

This blog is making my heart smile. As I look outside my window, the new day begins, I'm excited to know that in spite of what I'm facing, my situation will work out for my good. I'm used to people misjudging me because they don't know any better. So, I pardon their ignorance, but I will not pardon a disrespectful attitude. If you think adding sarcasm or trying to sweeten a comment with a smile is supposed to make a person feel better, you're sadly mistaken.

No one deserves to be insulted or patronized. Just because someone makes a random joke that has nothing to do with you or me, it doesn't mean we have to take everything that is said to us out of context, just to make the other party look bad. I always examine myself daily like God's word said, so I will not be judged of anyone. People can try to judge me, but they can't.

"But let a man (woman) examine himself (herself) ..." 1 Corinthians 11:28. That means we cannot point fingers at anyone else but ourselves.

On the other hand, this is where the other half of this scriptures kicks in when I was talking about no one can judge me. "For if we judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world." 1 Corinthians 11:31-32.

I take my walk with God very seriously and I love the Lord with all my heart. I follow the example of Christ to love everyone as they are. In spite of flaws, what they like or dislike, male, female, gay, or straight. Because if I'm the light of the world, I have to let my light shine, no matter who tries to demean my character. Sometimes I may be the only Jesus they see. And woe unto you for trying to make me look bad. Isaiah Chapter five explains in detail how foolish it is for people to call themselves wise when they speak of foolish things.

Concerning my situation at work, God's Word came to my mind when Isaiah 5:20, 21 states, "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and put light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!" One thing those who persecuted me fail to realize is, you can't outsmart the all knowing God, who created this beautiful planet called Earth. The awesome God who parted the skies from the oceans. God has already won my battle for me and there is nothing they can do about it because He's God, and He had already decided what to do with those who harmed me in a foolish way. The person who framed me, set me up deliberately to get me in trouble all along. Therefore, I am innocent.  I have nothing to hide. Like I've stated in my note of facebook, you can't get rid of a guilty conscience. I was not myself and this person has brought me out of character. She provoked me to anger. I regret for responding in anger, but at least I did not sin, like God's Word states, and I have not harmed her like some of my coworkers have "claimed." For I am not ashamed to speak the truth and nothing but the truth.Yes, my God is awesome like that. Every person that came against me in the past, they stumbled and fell. And yet, I'm still standing. Even though I'm hiding in my pavilion, I know the Lord heard my cry. And I will see the results soon. For I serve a true living God. You see, I rightly divide the word of truth and I ask God for insight for I am just a mortal. I can't see far ahead the way God can, however, God has given me power to speak life into my day. We must be careful of speaking negative or positive things to each other and to ourselves.

And let this be an encouragement to you. Even if you feel you're not there with God or people say you don't qualify with God, please know that you do! God knows your heart and loves you just the way you are. If you're looking for a sign, God has given you one today through my message of hope. Whatever it is you're feeling, God cares about you. Whenever you're feeling ignored and no one cares about you: God does.

God doesn't sleep or slumber like we do. And none of us will ever understand or know His ways. The way God moves in my life is magnificent because God has never failed me, for I have been serving Him for eight years of my life. Yes, I'm still a young woman with my whole life ahead of me. Please know, that it's not over until God says it's over. He's never lost a case.

May your hearts be encouraged and continue looking for a sign of victory in your life. May your hearts be filled with joy, knowing a better day has already arrived.
